About This Website

This website brings together some information about this quiet south-west Manchester suburb. Advertisers, societies and other organisations mentioned are either based in the area or have some connection with it. Although Davyhulme, along wth Flixton, is generally considered part of the Urmston area, this website focuses mainly on Davyhulme. The website is run on a non-profitmaking basis; the small income from advertisers and email accounts goes towards internet costs.

Davyhulme is a leafy residential suburb 5 miles to the south west of the city of Manchester UK. Within the area is the The Trafford Centre which is a key tourist attraction in the North West and one of the UK’s leading shopping and leisure destinations attracting almost 30 million visitors per annum. Davyhulme is often associated with the neighbouring localities of Urmston town and Flixton village as it was, until local government reorganisation in 1974, governed by Urmston Urban District Council. It is now in the Metropolitan Borough Of Trafford which is one of the ten boroughs of the County Of Greater Manchester.

History

Davyhulme can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was the seat of John Hulme. It is assumed that 'Davy' was prefixed to Hulme, to distinguish it from Hulme in Manchester. In 1948 the then Minister for Health, Aneurin Bevan, conducted the symbolic inauguration of the National Health Service at Davyhulme's Park Hospital (now Trafford General Hospital). Davyhulme Hall stood in what is now Davyhulme Park Golf Course.

Website Compiler

I was born at Urmston Cottage Hospital in 1955 and have always lived in Flixton, Urmston and now Davyhulme. Although I run this website as a personal hobby, I welcome constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement. Spelling mistakes and poor grammar are two of my pet hates, so I'd welcome corrections to those too.
